1. Automatic Diabetic Retinopathy Eye-Screening System (ADRES)

Case introduction: Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is considered as one of the leading causes of blindness around the world. However, blindness from DR can be controlled if the disease is identified in early stages and managed properly with respective treatments. The main barrier for the early diagnosis of DR is the shortage of experienced ophthalmologists, time and cost for eye examinations and lack of awareness.

ADRES is the solution to overcome the above difficulties. It is a set of cloud based REST APIs, that can be used to identify pathological stages of DR from retinal images uploaded ophthalmoscopes or mobile phones. ADRES uses proprietary image processing and machine learning algorithms deployed in the cloud to process and analyze the images to return a diagnostic report on DR. The diagnostic test results will be available to be viewed through a mobile app or a web app from anywhere in the world.

ADRES is capable of identifying the four pathological stages (Microaneurysm, Hemorrhage, Exudes and Neovascularizations) of DR and graphically define the boundary of the regions where the retina is affected by the different type of pathologies. This machine generated graphical representation can mimic an experienced ophthalmologist’s identification of the same pathologies up to a very close level.

There are a lot of advantages when compared with the classic method of identifying DR. Doctors working with diabetic patients, Ophthalmologists, mass-scale health campaigns and even individuals who are willing to check for DR themselves can make use of this system which is both cost and time effective.

The business model for ADRES contains two paths which involves clinical approach and the consumer approach. The revenue generation from ADRES will depend on licenses to use the APIs. The clinics will be charged on unit basis while the consumer product will be charged per test.

2. Ant Forest

Case introduction: This is an environmental protection project. It encourages users to choose a green lifestyle such as travelling by public transportation and paying utility bills online. Such behavior is counted and converted into virtual "green energy" that can then be used to grow a virtual tree on a user's mobile app. When enough points have been accumulated to grow a virtual tree, it is converted into a real tree, which will be planted in the desert by Ant Financial and its public service partners. In turn, it inspires users to further adopt low-carbon and environmental-friendly behaviors.By the end of August 2017, more than 230 million users have joined in Ant Forest program and planted over 10 million real trees, reducing emission by 1.22 million tons.

3. Digital Transformation in Sri Lankan Education System with "SMART SCHOOL"

Case introduction: Smart School Programme has been started to empower government schools of Sri Lanka with the Digital Transformation in Learning & Teaching process. The project has executed with the contribution of multiple partners including Ministry of Education, Microsoft Sri Lanka, Commercial Bank Sri Lanka, Headstart Pvt Ltd and Dialog Axiata.

The Project has been designed with multiple components of digital transformation, which includes capacity building of school leaders and teachers, providing Internet access, Office 365 Education for students, Integrated Learning Management System to each school, Interactive learning contents, helpdesk support, continuous follow-up & school visits, building E-learning circles at schools and recognizing and celebrating the success. In addition to these components, the project has introduced Microsoft educator network to educators in those schools to create an internationally recognized learning space for them to follow in transformation process.

This was a huge success with respect to the KPIs which has been set at the initiation of the project. More than 5000 teachers were trained on teach with technology, with the help of eLearning contents developed in local languages. While introducing Microsoft educator network to schools, more than 12000 learning badges were earned by the teachers at ground level. The project has developed 3 digital ambassadors for each school, who can lead the transformation in school level. They have conducted training sessions for teachers as well as students and they were able to create more than 5000 teaching resources at school level, with the support of the tools introduced by the program. These contents were uploaded in online learning management system, which students can access them even from home. The project has given Microsoft Office 365 edu licenses for each school and they have created more than 25000 student users on this cloud platform.25 schools were benefited from Online LMS and they can access their own courses through this cloud platform. Since the LMS has integrated with Office 365 platform users were empowered with an easy access of multiple systems, but through a single portal.

This project is recognized as one of the most successful edu transformation projects and we are in the process of implementing the 2nd phase of the project. There is a plan to implement this project island wide with private public partnership.

4. FastMile - Wireless Broadband Connectivity that Goes Everywhere

Case introduction: Broadband is an essential service for individuals and businesses. Yet many rural and suburban areas still lack reliable, high-speed broadband access. Nokia FastMile fills the gap. A wireless alternative to fixed access, FastMile extends broadband into new areas, helping to meet National Broadband Plans to bring the internet to every household. Companies can benefit from FastMile too. High-speed broadband access enables them to work more efficiently, bringing economic benefits to the local area. FastMile gives mobile operators an opportunity to extend their customer base and offer new services using their existing network infrastructure.

Technical Solution

Combining a specific fixed wireless radio antenna topology solution with interference mitigation techniques, along with an end user high gain, directional beamforming antenna, all installable on top of any existing LTE network, Nokia FastMile allows operators to build profitably on the existing macro installed base and idle rural spectrum offering fixed wireless broadband with guaranteed throughput to suburban, rural, and deep rural users. The solution has four main components - the outdoor modem and indoor router, LTE-Advanced network, a controller, and mobile apps. FastMile can use a wide range of FDD and TDD frequencies.

Adoption of this solution by end-users requires an easy to buy, install, and manage approach. FastMile is designed to increase end user adoption with fast and low cost deployment using appealing and easy to install equipment in residential locations. Combined with an integrated installation capability that covers the residential equipment, radio access network, controller, and smartphone applications to help users with the installation, FastMile is focusing on keeping operator deployment costs to a minimum.

5. Rwanda Digital Ambassadors Program

Case introduction: Rwanda Digital Ambassadors Program (DAP) is an initiative led by the Rwandan Ministry of ICT (MICT) aimed at increasing the number of digitally literate citizens and their use of e-government and e-business services.  In alignment with the Rwanda Digital Talent Policy and the World Economic Forum's Internet for All Initiative, Rwanda DAP will increase Rwandans' digital literacy, drive digital adoption, and bridge the ICT skills gap. The Digital Ambassadors Program (DAP) will employ 5,000 young Rwandans, aiming for 50% participation of young women and girls, as they serve as digital skills trainers. By doing so, they will impact the lives of 5 million citizens by providing hands-on training to use Information and Communication Technologies Internet and mobile applications in 30 different districts across the country of Rwanda.

Rwanda DAP will be implemented through a network of partners, including Mozilla, Next 3B and GIZ, and the World Economic Forum, with DOT serving as a key implementer and convenor of partnerships. The initiative consists of three consecutive phases: Proof of Concept (PoC), Roll Out, and National Scale Up. Given the ambitious scope of the initiative, targets, funding needs, and partnerships will increase with each phase.

6. Shared Bicycles

Case introduction: This is a case of sharing economy. Based on the model of sharing economy, shared bicycles applied the technologies of IoT, cloud computing and big data, and integrated smartphones, location services, mobile payment, etc. in people's daily life scenario of bicycle travel, providing users with a convenient, green and low-carbon way of transportation. Currently shared bicycles have provided services in over 200 cities in China and more than 30 cities in other countries. Statistics show that the number of the registered users has exceeded 400 million and has reduced nearly 3 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. At the meantime, the supervision of shared bicycles is testing the ability of city management and the integrity of enterprises and citizens. Joint participation of government regulatory departments, enterprises and citizens are required to let shared bicycles contribute to urban governance.

7. Smart Dunhuang, an International Card along the Silk Road

Case introduction: This case is about Smart Tourism in Dunhuang, China. Dunhuang has achieved impressive achievements by adopting an overall idea of "Smart Tourism Leads Industry-oriented Smart City Construction" and fully leveraging the "1 data center, 9 sections, and 31 projects" overall technical framework for Smart City. After Dunhuang's Smart Tourism was rolled out, the annual number of visitors to Dunhuang had increased by 30% on average. In 2016, Dunhuang received 8.015 million visitors and the overall tourism income reached CNY7.816 billion. The tourism industry in Dunhuang occupies over 60% of the city's overall GDP.

8. The Platform of Global Renewable Energy Reserves Evaluation, Prospect Analysis and Planning

Case introduction: Using Internet, cloud computing, big data and geographic information technologies, as well as making full consideration of other elements including political and economic situation, the trend of the industry development, energy demand, energy structure and ecological environment etc., this case is aiming to construct a comprehensive data platform including global renewable energy, basic geography, socioeconomic and power grid information. The platform can be applied to discuss reserve distribution, market analysis and forecast of renewable energy market and reserves, such as hydropower energy, wind energy and solar energy.

9. The Innovative Voice Input of iFLYTEK Help to Achieve Unobstructed Communication among People

Case Introduction: This is a case of intelligent speech input method. Speech recognition rate of this input method has exceeded 98%, and supported 22 different Chinese dialects speech input. Besides, "Suishengyi" is the intelligent speech technology of speech translation which can be switched between online and offline. Furthermore, the accurate input result of iFLYTEK input method can be ensured even if in very low volume or noisy environments. Until November 2017, the number of iFLYTEK input method users has exceeded 500 million, including over 120 million active users, and the percentage of speech input users has reached 40%.

10. Build China's Largest Internet-based Tumor Medicine and Data Platform with Core Technologies of AI-aided Clinical Decision Support System

Case introduction: This case refers to innovative deployment of an AI-aided clinical decision support system. By combining patient case data and algorithm models to tumor treatment, the system helps create accurate diagnosis & treatment models, thus contributing to management decisions, scientific researches, and clinical diagnosis & treatment. This system has been certified by the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China for third level information system security protection, and certified by medical information security standard system HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act).
