The reform and innovation of each generation of communication technology have a profound impact on people's lives. In 2020, the rapidly developing 5G technology is promoting the digital transformation of various industries, such as industrial internet, cloud computing, smart medical care, distance education, and smart travel.

Leading technology development

Wu Hequan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that small-scale cloud data centers providing real-time data processing and analysis should be used to deal with data-sensitive business, which can not only reduce latency and bandwidth requirements, but also ensure reliability.

"We need to dig deeper into the demand for information technology in industry scenarios, combine edge computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and other enabling technologies, as well as develop wireless private networks and converged networking to effectively accelerate the development and transformation of 5G technology," said Zhang Ping, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a professor at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications.

John Hoffman, CEO of the international mobile trade association GSMA Ltd, stressed that the impact of 5G is very significant and will usher in the transformation of a variety of industries, including manufacturing, transportation, as well as medicine and health. "This is an accelerated change that allows us to see unimaginable things taking shape," he added.

Ling Hong, director of the Department of Information Management and Information System, Fudan University and the Smart City Research Center of Fudan University, noted that 5G is not only a technology, but also a set of standards. "The standard of mobile communication technology has gradually developed to the three major scenarios of 5G, namely enhanced mobile broadband, high-reliability and low-latency communications, as well as massive machine communications, such as large-scale Internet of Things."

Zhao Juntao, Ericsson China president, said that the 5G ecosystem is very different from that of other generations of mobile communication technologies, bringing many new challenges. "It is much broader in scope, has more participants, and more links."

Enabling industry applications

According to Xu Xiaolan, president of the China Industrial Internet Research Institute, 5G provides an important wireless network guarantee for the data flow of industrial interconnection, and the industrial internet also provides a wide range of application scenarios for 5G. The 5G application in industrial internet is currently mainly used in key links, such as industrial design, manufacturing, quality inspection, operation and maintenance, as well as safety.

Wang Zhiqin, vice president of the China Academy of Information and Technology, noted that the in-depth integration of 5G with cloud computing, big data, AI, and other technologies will make enterprise operations more intelligent, production and manufacturing more lean, supply and demand matching more precise, as well as the industrial division of labor deeper.

Cristiano Amon, president of Qualcomm Incorporated, emphasized that 5G will be the main platform for video distribution. People will have a reliable connection to view news and sports, while 5G will finally deliver on user-content generation.

Zhao Dachun, vice general manager of China Mobile, said that "5G + smart medicine" has become a global 5G development hotspot and a focus of competition. Operators' in-depth cooperation with medical institutions will create 5G medical industry application scenarios in high-definition consultations, remote surgery, 5G medical robots, and other fields. Lu Qingjun, office director of the National Telemedicine and Internet Medical Center, pointed out that "internet + medicine" has played a major role in the diagnosis and treatment of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Yu Minhong, chairman of New Oriental Education and Technology Group, said that 5G will bring a technological revolution in the field of education, providing new solutions for the balance of urban and rural education. He recommended that relevant departments increase the coverage of 5G networks in schools in rural areas and develop distance learning with internet technology so that high-quality educational resources can be shared.
