German AI development focuses on differentiated competition

In response to fierce international competition, Germany has focused on personnel training and industrial artificial intelligence (AI) in the development of its AI industry, hoping to use its advantages in industrial data to develop differentiated competition.

Professor Bernhard Schölkopf, a director at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, was awarded the "German Artificial Intelligence Award" in 2020 for his pioneer work in the field of core methods of AI.

Professor Schölkopf is a world-renowned expert in machine learning. His basic research has laid the foundation for reliable intelligent systems for robotics or autonomous driving. He had previously won the Leibniz Prize in 2018, the most renowned German research prize.

Schölkopf noted that the best way to develop true innovation is to attract good talent. He said that the top talents not only want to work at world-class scientific research institutions, but also hope to establish start-up companies and cooperate with others.

With funding from the state of Baden-Württemberg, the Cyber Valley Research Collaboration that integrates scientific research, business, and society was established. This is one of Europe's largest research partnerships in AI, bringing together the research activities of leading international institutions in economic and academic circles.

"Now, we have become one of the most attractive start-ups in the field of AI in Europe, and many European scientists and young talents find their places here," added Schölkopf.

In addition, German companies have gradually increased their emphasis on AI. Bosch Group, a leading global supplier of technology and services that had generated 77.9 billion euros ($91.69 billion) in sales in 2019, has clearly made AI its key technology. By 2025, all Bosch products will either contain AI or be developed or produced with the help of AI. Moreover, in the next two years, Bosch Group will train more than 20,000 managers, engineers, and developers to become AI experts.

"Bosch is very strong in the field of industrial AI like other European and German companies," said Michael Bolle, chief digital officer and chief technology officer of Bosch Group.

Bolle also noted that data sovereignty and data availability are key factors and basic conditions for the development of AI and Industry 4.0. Under unified security standards, sovereignty and open data architecture will become an important prerequisite for Europe to maintain its international competitiveness. Bosch will support the development of Gaia-X, a European data platform.
