Werner Zorn delivered a speech via video-link during the Release Ceremony for World Leading Internet Scientific and Technological Achievements on Nov 23, 2020.
Werner Zorn, known as the "Father of the German Internet", is the foreign co-chair of the World Leading Internet Scientific and Technological Achievements Recommendation Committee.
Here is Zorn's speech:
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen:
Despite the Corona-restrictions on the WIC 2020, we again had an overwhelming response to our Call for Applications for the 15 WIC Awards, with 293 nominated projects, among which were those from Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Russia, Sweden and the United States, including Chinese joint ventures.
Special thanks to the 36 members of the Recommendation Committee including its Honorary Chair Wan Gang, being also chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology, and my co-chair colleague Wu Hequan from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, having diligently gone through this huge stack of project documentation, some of them several times for the sake of fair comparison and adequate evaluation which took up to a week or even longer.
For my part, I would admit that once you have started evaluation, the reading gets more and more fascinating, so that at the end of the process, one would – against the rules – like to nominate at least every second project team to be awarded. With that said, the final 15 projects elected can even more enjoy the public recognition and our celebration of their outstanding work.
Those who have not been placed among the first 15 also deserve our thanks and recognition combined with our best wishes to be rewarded by the open market with commercial success.
Last but not least, I also want to thank the organizing committee with its staff who did this tremendous work behind the stage to run such a demanding competition.
And finally, I propose to consider: why not place all the 193 project-applications on a WIC server so that they can be looked up by everyone who might be interested?
Thanks to everybody!
