The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has selected the top 10 most innovative technologies of 2021 in its magazine, according to Spanish news website ABC on March 7.
Some of the technologies were developed years ago and at first gained little attention and others are newborns.
The mRNA COVID-19 vaccines
The messenger RNA (mRNA) is a single-stranded RNA molecule that is complementary to one of the DNA strands of a gene. It has been used to make COVID-19 vaccines and has a shorter manufacturing times compared to some other types of vaccines.
GPT-3
Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3) is a language model that uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology to produce text. Released by OpenAI, an AI research and deployment company, in May 2020, the model is regarded as the greatest of its kind with strong functions like predicting following words based on collected data.
TikTok algorithm
The TikTok algorithm is essentially a recommendation system "designed to help people have a more personalized experience". It effectively raises interactions between the creator and the audience instead of simply offering users hot issues.
Lithium metal batteries
Silicon Valley-based QuantumScape Corp said that the lithium metal battery would perform better in autonomous self-driving vehicles than the lithium ion battery.
Volkswagen has signed agreements with the company to equip lithium metal batteries in its vehicles from 2025.
Data pool
A data pool, also known as data credit, is now available to some governments to protect private data. Individual managers of the data pool are responsible to the beneficiaries for safe management.
Green hydrogen
Hydrogen has long been a promising alternative to fossil fuels. With a rich reserve, the energy can generate power without releasing carbon dioxide. It can also be used as a synthetic fuel, directly replacing gasoline.
However, the synthesizing process calls for great power and can cause pollution. The solution may be found in the use of solar and wind power, where hydrogen products are made by clean energy and utilization of such products is also pollution-free.
In addition to green hydrogen, blue hydrogen extracted from natural gas and black hydrogen made with coal and crude are also promising clean energy sources.
Digital tracing of contacts
The digital tracing of illness contacts is expected to be an application that helps users avoid being infected in an epidemic. Some experts are now considering promoting it in other medical fields.
Precise positioning
China completed its Beidou Navigation Satellite System in mid 2020.It will improve the current positioning accuracy to within 1.5 to 2 meters.
Remote service
Telemedicine and distance education were two main fields that used remote service during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Multi-functional AI
Experts are now improving AI performance by extending its senses. Visual and hearing devices are to be installed on robots to make them more intelligent and efficient.
