China's largest new energy smart driver training base opens for service

China's largest new energy smart driver training base opened for service on April 8 at the Eastern Fashion driving school in Beijing.

Nearly a thousand virtual reality (VR) driving training simulators and thousands of new energy learner-driven vehicles were available at the training court, helping learners practice their parallel parking, starting on a hill and reverse stall parking.

Instead of having a driving coach sitting in the back seat, the vehicles are equipped with smart vehicle-mounted systems and 20 sensors, as well as two signal receivers on their roofs to guarantee safe driving practice.

Information about the vehicles such as their number, position and speed is shown on a screen in the central control room, where coaches can learn about learners' weaknesses and their condition inside the vehicle and guide them in driving skills.

VR, AI and 5G technologies are jointly used for training at the school, said Yan Wenhui, general-manager at the Eastern Fashion driving school, adding that safe driving is a focus during training and is ensured via the school's behavioral big data analysis platform.

He said that the VR simulator not only helps learners better understand and abide by traffic regulations, but covers situations like punctures on the highway, brake failure and other emergencies.

All learners have to spend at least eight hours in the VR simulator to learn basic operations, Yan said.

Charging piles are crucial in powering the vehicles at the base.

According to State Grid Beijing Electric Power Company, the base now has 1,049 charging piles and a total capacity of 11,600 kilovolt-amperes, both ranking tops in China.
