Longshoremen are no longer to be seen at the Mawan 5G Smart Port, working hard under the strong sunshine, but now may be spotted in front of screens, remotely controlling several cranes simultaneously with just two hands.

Based on China's first 5G port commercial network, workers at the port are able to control machines through the 5G internet from the control center.

Similar operation modes are also evident in other plants. For example, at the Skyworth 5G+8K flexible intelligent factory, data integration of 181 key quality inspection points has been completed, shortening checking speed from 15 seconds per set to 3 seconds.

BYD Company deployed 13 applications to realize lean production and flexible manufacturing, improving production efficiency by 25 percent.

Based on the 5G smart power grid, 5G plus unmanned aerial vehicles were adopted in automatic patrol inspection at Southern Power Grid Corporation's Pengcheng substation in South China's Guangdong province, which promotes efficiency and safety.

At the 5G fully connected factory affiliated to Huawei Technologies Co, a smart phone can be produced every 28.5 seconds thanks to good service flows and cloud technologies.

5G industrial applications have been and will be promoted in more and more scenarios.

At a meeting focusing on scale development of the 5G industry application held in Dongguan, Guangdong on July 25, Xie Cun, director of the Information and Communication Development Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, gave an in-depth interpretation of the recently-released 5G Application "Sailing" Action Plan (2021-2023).

According to the action plan, a significant development of 5G applications will be seen in China by 2023 and a new ecology of deep integration of information, communication and operation technologies will be built in the country.

Meanwhile, the network's basic capacity, platform functions and security are expected to improve by making breakthroughs in the depth and breadth of 5G applications in key areas and building a double-pillar system of technology industry and standardization.

The action plan also said that by 2023, the penetration rate of 5G in large industrial enterprises should exceed 35 percent and the popularity rate of individual users of the technology should exceed 40 percent. What's more, more than 100 5G benchmark applications should be in place in each key industry.

Xie said that in the two years since the commercialization of 5G, China has made breakthroughs in 5G technological innovation and accelerated network construction, forming some ground-level systematic advantages.

China now has built the world's largest 5G network with approximately 961,000 5G base stations, accounting for more than 70 percent of the global total. By the end of this June, the country had more than 365 million 5G terminal connections, 80 percent of the global total and a 5G user penetration rate of 17.8 percent.

What's more, there are more than 10,000 5G application innovation examples throughout the country and 5G-based first-aid and emergency rescue, telemedicine and health management is applied at more than 600 tertiary hospitals.

Construction of more than 1,500 5G+industrial Internet projects are underway and 5G applications have been adopted by 138 steel enterprises, 194 power enterprises and 175 mines.

Chairwoman of Gree Electric Appliances Dong Mingzhu said that Gree is now making efforts in smart plants and has achieved many unmanned production operations, which greatly improved efficiency.

She added that 5G is a game-changer for production, research and development and management of enterprises, particularly for manufacturing enterprises.

Xiao Yaqing, minister of industry and information technology, stressed that enterprises should be at full steam ahead to promote innovative 5G industrial applications to better serve the high-quality development of the economy and society.
