The two previous World Internet Conferences in 2014 and 2015 developed the Internet in significant and varied ways, according to Ren Xianliang, deputy head of the Cyberspace Administration of China, at the 3rd WIC press conference held by the State Council Information Office on Oct 12 in Beijing.

Ren summarized four points. Firstly, the previous conferences enabled meaningful discussion on a variety of topics. For instance, hot issues such as "Internet+", Internet security, network cultural communications and Internet technology and standards were brought up and thoroughly probed, which formed an intellectual foundation for future development.

Secondly, leading scientific and technological achievements were released. For example, the "Light of the Internet" expo, held during the 2nd WIC, offered an opportunity for over 250 companies from all over the world to showcase their 1000 new technologies.

Thirdly, the two WICs promoted close cooperation between delegates and companies.

Fourthly, they produced influential documents, such as the Wuzhen Initiative, calling for responsibility for the future of the Internet to be shared by the international community.

Ren noted that the coming 3rd WIC will focus on innovation and public interest by promoting a global transformation of the Internet governance system and building a communal future in cyberspace.
