Liu Zhenmin, under-secretary-general for the Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations, delivered a speech at the 2021 World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit held from Sept 26 to 28 in East China's Zhejiang province.
He said the theme of this year's World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit, "Towards a New Era of Digital Civilization - Building a Community with a Shared Future in Cyberspace", is both timely and forward-looking and added that the event will "provide a framework for examining the impact of digital transformation in promoting an inclusive and sustainable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, and in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals."
In his speech, Liu said dealing with the global digital divide and enhancing data security and cybersecurity through strengthening policy frameworks and promoting international cooperation should be highly valued.
He stressed that cybersecurity is essential to future emerging technologies that will play a key role in industrial transformation and development.
Among these technologies, Liu called for promoting and improving 5G application in various fields, such as remote learning, telemedicine, emergency care, and natural disaster warning systems, while also helping reduce emissions and fight climate change.
